THE SEASONS OF HOLLISTER HILL FARM
Our barn is open during the day for guests to visit the animals and if you like at chore time, help with chores which includes cleaning and bedding the pens and feeding and watering the animals.
WINTER
Our winters are usually long, cold and snowy. The animals most often require more attention. It is always a challenge to keep their waterers working, the driveways plowed, and the house cozy and warm.
But...There is a lot more time to play! Cross-country ski or snowshoe on our 200 acre farm (we have some equipment available to our guests). Snowmobile, our property borders the VAST trail system. Relax by the fire in our cozy common room with a warm beverage or glass of wine.
SUGAR SEASON
March - April
- Help tap trees and set out buckets.
- Gather sap.
- Boil and make syrup on our wood-fired sugar arch.
(Sugaring season is very dependent on temperature so it is hard to predict when we will actually have a sap flow and make syrup.)
SPRING
- Beefalo calves, piglets and kittens are born.
- We get baby chicks and turkeys.
- Plant the garden and get farm equipment ready for haying.
- Fix pasture fences.
SUMMER
- Work in organic vegetable, fruit, and herb garden.
- Flower gardening.
- Canning and preserving fruits and vegetables.
- Haying.
- Cutting firewood.
- Usually we have a litter or two of AKC Golden Retriever puppies.
FALL
- Finish up haying and more firewood
- Enjoy the foliage
- Harvest the rest of the garden and till the soil
- Hunker in for a long winter's rest!
